There is no denying, I love Margaritas! Definitely, my drink of choice…although, I’ve been craving a good ice-cold IPA lately. I digress.
I was never a big drinker. I didn’t even drink in college before I was 21. Yep, I was the perpetual “Designated Driver” (or as we called them down South, “Sober Driver”). I only mention that as I find it funny that whenever I mention the term “Sober Driver” out here in California, I just get blank stares like they have nooooo clue what I’m talking about. Same thing happens when I say “Parking Deck,” what we in the South would call what others might know as a “Parking Structure.” Again, blank stares. And again, I digress.
So, let me cut to the chase. All I know is that after trying a Margarita for the first time (I may have stolen a sip or two my Mom’s drink only once…or twice…), I declared that my 21st birthday would be at a Mexican restaurant and Margaritas would be served! And they were: September 29th, a little hole in the wall Mexican dive right on the corner of Dean Road and Opelika Road in Auburn, Alabama. Aside from that, the details are a little fuzzy. I kid, I kid. But I do know on that night, someone else got the role of Sober Driver.
In all honesty, I didn’t have that much to drink that night, but I do remember thoroughly enjoying what was, essentially, an adult slushy served in a small fishbowl with 2,600 multicolored straws and a mini umbrella or two. Soon thereafter, along with graduating from college, I graduated to a Margarita…on the rocks…which became my new favorite. As it was, I worked at an Applebee’s the summer after my senior year when I first tasted their Perfect Margarita, which is actually a pretty darn good Margarita. Since then, I have had many a Marg and have come to appreciate the talent required to make a good Margarita…one with solid Tequila, Fresh lime, Grand Marnier and just a hint of sweetness…served in glass with a perfectly salted rim (flaked kosher salt, of course).
As you can see, I have become somewhat of a Margarita snob…so I must warn you, once you try my Margarita, you may never, ever enjoy one of those adult slushies at your local Mexican joint again. And that’s OK. It just means you’re growing up…whether you’re 23 or 93.
Cheers!
